Sync Bookmarks: The Complete Guide (2026)
Bookmarks are the one thing every browser keeps to itself. Chrome Sync moves Chrome bookmarks between your devices, Edge Sync does the same inside Edge, and iCloud covers Safari — three closed loops that never touch each other. So "sync bookmarks" means two different jobs: keeping one browser's bookmarks on all your devices, or keeping one set of bookmarks across all your browsers. This guide covers the second one: why it breaks by default, the two ways to fix it (manual export/import or an automatic cross-browser tool), and exactly how to sync bookmarks in Chrome, Edge and Safari.
What is bookmark sync?
Bookmark sync means keeping one set of bookmarks up to date in more than one place, and there are two versions of that job. The first is what Chrome Sync, Edge Sync and iCloud already do: they copy one browser's bookmarks to your other devices. That is one browser on many devices. The second is what people usually mean when they search for how to sync bookmarks: one set of bookmarks across many browsers, so a link saved in Chrome is also sitting in Edge and Safari. The first is built in; the second is what this guide is about.
Why your bookmarks don't sync across browsers
Most browsers only sync within their own ecosystem:
- Chrome Sync works across Chrome browsers only
- Edge Sync works across Edge browsers only
- iCloud syncs Safari bookmarks between Apple devices only
If you use multiple browsers, your bookmarks stay fragmented. According to user feedback, manually exporting and importing bookmarks between browsers is the #1 frustration — especially when switching devices.
Method 1: Sync bookmarks automatically (recommended)
The easiest way to sync bookmarks across Chrome, Edge and Safari is using a dedicated cross-browser bookmark sync tool like Bookmark UniSync.
How it works:
- Install the browser extension on Chrome and Edge
- Install the macOS app for Safari synchronization
- Create an account and your bookmarks sync automatically
Benefits: Real-time sync, folder structure preserved, cloud backup included.
If you are still weighing automatic sync against the self-hosted options, the comparison of 6 bookmark alternatives for Safari covers the differences — including which ones actually write to the native bookmark bar.
How to sync bookmarks in Chrome
"Sync bookmarks in Chrome" means two different things, and mixing them up is why people end up with bookmarks in three places and trust in none of them.
If you only use Chrome, you do not need any of this — turn on Chrome's own sync and you are done. If you use Chrome plus another browser, Chrome's sync will not help you, because it only syncs Chrome to Chrome.
What Chrome's own sync does and does not do
Chrome syncs bookmarks through your Google account. Sign in on another computer and your bookmark bar appears there too.
| Chrome sync does | Chrome sync does not |
|---|---|
| Chrome on desktop → Chrome on another desktop | Chrome → Edge |
| Chrome desktop → Chrome on Android/iOS | Chrome → Safari |
| Chrome → Chrome across your own devices | Anything at all if you are signed out |
It is per-browser, per-account. That is the whole limitation, and no setting changes it.
Get Chrome bookmarks into Edge and Safari
You have two routes:
- One-off — manual export/import. Fine for a migration, useless for daily use: every new bookmark stays behind.
- Chrome → Edge: in Chrome open Bookmark manager → ⋮ → Export bookmarks; in Edge open
edge://favorites→ ⋮ → Import favorites and pick that file. - Chrome → Safari and Safari → Chrome: see Import bookmarks from Safari to Chrome and Send Chrome bookmarks to Safari below.
- The export half of all of this is covered in the bookmark backup guide.
- Chrome → Edge: in Chrome open Bookmark manager → ⋮ → Export bookmarks; in Edge open
- Ongoing — a cross-browser sync tool. This is what Bookmark UniSync does: the Chrome extension writes to Chrome's native bookmark bar, the Edge extension does the same on Edge, and the macOS app bridges Safari. Save a bookmark in Chrome and it shows up in the other two, folders included.
If you self-host, Floccus and XBrowserSync can also move Chrome bookmarks to Edge through WebDAV or a sync server — but neither has a real Safari answer. See Floccus vs XBrowserSync for that trade-off.
Sync Safari bookmarks with Chrome
Safari is the hard one. Chrome and Edge can talk to each other; Safari cannot join that conversation directly, because Safari extensions are not allowed to read or write the bookmark database.
Two things are possible, and it is worth being clear about which one you want:
Import bookmarks from Safari to Chrome
This is a one-time transfer. Do it before you start syncing anything else.
Step 1 — export from Safari
- Open Safari on your Mac
- File → Export → Bookmarks…
- Save the
Safari Bookmarks.htmlfile somewhere you can find it
Step 2 — import into Chrome
- Open Chrome →
chrome://bookmarks(or Bookmarks → Bookmark manager) - Click the ⋮ menu at the top right of the manager → Import bookmarks
- Select the HTML file you exported from Safari
Step 3 — tidy up
Chrome adds the imported bookmarks under an "Imported" folder rather than merging them. Drag them where you want them before the next sync, otherwise every future sync carries the odd folder structure forward.
Limitation: this imports a snapshot. Bookmarks you add in Safari afterwards will not appear in Chrome until you repeat the export/import.
Send Chrome bookmarks to Safari
The reverse direction, same idea:
- In Chrome, open Bookmark manager → ⋮ → Export bookmarks, and save the HTML file
- In Safari, choose File → Import From → Bookmarks HTML File
- Pick the file you just exported
Safari imports them into a folder named after the file, which you can then move or rename.
If you want this to keep working automatically
Manual export/import is a snapshot, and Safari is the browser that makes that painful — there is no scheduler and no Safari extension that can do it for you. The only way to keep Safari in an ongoing sync is a macOS app acting as a bridge, because that is the only thing Apple's extension model allows to touch the bookmark store. That is why Bookmark UniSync ships a macOS app for Safari alongside the Chrome and Edge extensions.
Method 2: Sync bookmarks with a cloud tool
Use a cloud bookmark manager that syncs across browsers:
- Bookmark UniSync — Real-time, cross-browser sync with native bookmark bar support
- Supports Chrome, Edge, and Safari on both Windows and macOS
- Bookmarks appear directly in your browser's native bookmark bar
Why Users Choose Bookmark UniSync
Unlike other tools that require complex setup (WebDAV servers, GitHub repos, or VPNs), Bookmark UniSync is designed for simplicity:
- No server setup — works out of the box
- No VPN required — accessible in all regions including China
- Native bookmark bar — bookmarks appear where you expect them
- Real-time sync — changes propagate in seconds
Bookmark sync FAQ
How do I sync bookmarks in Chrome?
Two ways. If every device runs Chrome, turn on Chrome sync with your Google account and bookmarks follow you automatically. If you also use Edge or Safari, Chrome sync will not reach them — you need either a one-off manual export and import or a cross-browser sync tool.
Can I sync Safari bookmarks with Chrome automatically?
Not with anything Apple or Google ships. iCloud syncs Safari only between Apple devices, and Chrome syncs Chrome only between Chrome installs. Automatic Safari ↔ Chrome sync requires a third-party tool with a native macOS component, because Safari extensions cannot access the bookmark database. Bookmark UniSync's macOS app is one; Floccus has an unmaintained helper app.
Does Chrome sync bookmarks with Safari?
No. Chrome sync is per-account and per-browser family: it moves bookmarks between Chrome installs signed into the same Google account, and nothing else. Safari is not part of that sync. Anything that claims otherwise is either doing a one-off HTML import or using a separate sync service.
Can I sync bookmarks between Chrome and Safari?
Yes. Use Bookmark UniSync's Chrome extension and macOS Safari app to enable two-way sync between Chrome and Safari.
How to sync bookmarks from Chrome to Edge?
Bookmark UniSync supports Chrome and Edge natively. Install the extension on both browsers and sign in to the same account.
Is there a free bookmark sync tool?
Bookmark UniSync offers a free plan with basic sync features and a 7-day free trial of premium auto-sync. If you self-host, Floccus and XBrowserSync are free and open source — see the alternatives comparison for what each one costs you in maintenance.
Can I sync bookmarks across Windows and Mac?
Yes. Bookmark UniSync works on both Windows and macOS, syncing bookmarks between Chrome, Edge, and Safari across platforms.
What is the difference between bookmark sync and bookmark backup?
Sync keeps a live copy of your bookmarks in more than one place and updates it as you go. A backup is a frozen HTML snapshot you restore from when something goes wrong. They solve different problems and you want both — the bookmark backup guide covers the export half.
